Large, modern airliners are huge and capable machines that are the pinnacle of modern engineering. And yet they are so reliable that are they are often taken for granted. Most people board these planes without a second thought as to their abilities in lifting tremendous loads over vast distances at fantastic speeds. That is unless that have a chance to see it up close and in action.
Maho Beach on St Maarten is one of the very few places on the planet where that is possible. Lying scant yards from the end of Princess Juliana International Airport, bystanders have the chance to see these planes fly right over their heads, hear the scream of their engines, and feel the kick of wake turbulence as they sail in to land on Runway 9. Not once on a recent visit did I see anyone ignore the sight spectacle of a 100+ ton jet go by so close that they could pelt it with a stone if they wanted to.
