Description
Like most things in this world, aviation is an evolution. From the second the Wright Flyer took to the air, the name of the game was how to improve upon that design, and every subsequent one that followed. It could be the quest for something faster, or perhaps it’s all about doing it more efficiently.
And for the Airbus A380, it’s all about sheer size!
When the A380 came onto the aviation scene, it set a whole new bar. First flown in 2005, the nose-to-tail double decker eclipsed its chief rival, the 747-400, by a wide margin. With a maximum gross takeoff weight of one point three MILLION pounds and able to carry over 800 passengers in a single class configuration, the massive airliner instantly seized the title of being the largest purpose-built airliner ever to take to the skies.
That size becomes rather apparent in this picture that I took recently of an Emirates A380 comes in for landing at San Francisco. Its massive bulk gives it an almost impervious aura as it easily shoulders its way past some fog that lies across the approach path for Runway 28R. The 747 may retain its favorite title of Queen Of The Skies, but only because nothing trumps the King.
